Conservative restoration of the establishment located in Piazza Vittorio Veneto 5

The project involves the restoration and maintenance of the facades of a historic building located at the entrance to Via Po, on the northeast side of Piazza Vittorio Veneto. This object, part of the block that completes the seventeenth-century Castellamontian exedra, is effectively a foundational piece of Turin’s architectural landscape, belonging to the area of closure of the so-called Porta Eridanea, i.e., the urban system enclosing the Contrada di Po towards the River.

The project’s purpose is to preserve the aesthetic and material integrity of the building, intervening on the exterior wall surfaces to reinstate chromatic uniformity and architectural coherence to the elevations on Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Giulia di Barolo. The restoration fits within the municipal guidelines for the protection of historic urban facades, ensuring an intervention that respects the original features of the building. More than two decades after the last conservative intervention, the facades showed signs of surface degradation due to the combined action of smog, ferrous oxides from the passage of tramways and prolonged sun exposure. Addressing these critical issues, the project comprises a thorough cleaning to remove deposits and impurities, followed by the stabilization of plasters and new painting with potassium silicate paints applied by brush to achieve a uniform and textural rendering.

Specific consideration was given to decorative elements: string courses, frames and reliefs are protected with new copper coatings, preventing infiltration and deterioration. The stone surfaces have been cleaned and treated with transparent protective products, while the metal elements, such as balconies and grates, have been sanded, treated with rust inhibitor, and repainted. The window frames too underwent a comprehensive wash, sand and paint job using highly weather-resistant products. With a conservative approach focused on the original materials and techniques, the project brings new vibrancy to the building, contributing to the valorization of one of Turin’s most representative urban contexts.
